LeadingAge, the association of nonprofit and mission-driven providers of aging services, today announced that President and CEO Katie Smith Sloan will step down, effective March 31, 2027.

Smith Sloan has led the association of nonprofit aging services providers since 2016. She previously served as LeadingAge’s COO, beginning in 2002. To date, the organization has not named a successor.
“I have been privileged to work alongside talented colleagues who go above and beyond every day to advocate for and support our members. I have been inspired by the dedication and creativity of a membership that works tirelessly to ensure older people can live their best lives,” Smith Sloan said in a statement. “Our vision of an America that values older adults and those who serve them has never been more important. I step down knowing that LeadingAge stands on a solid foundation, with a brilliant and important future ahead.”
LeadingAge represents more than 5,300 nonprofit providers of skilled nursing, assisted living, memory care, affordable housing, retirement communities, adult day programs, hospice, Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), home health and hospice. It is one of the three largest hospice industry groups.
Recently, LeadingAge penned a letter to Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), calling on the agency to let the six-month moratoria on hospice and home health Medicare enrollment expire in November.
The organization’s board has formed a search committee to name a new CEO.
The association’s board, led by chair Christie Hinrichs, president and CEO of Frasier, has formed a search committee; details about the search and a timeline will be forthcoming.
“The committee will undertake a thorough process, honoring Katie’s legacy and positioning the organization for continued success in service to our members and our shared mission,” said Board President Christie Hinrichs, in a statement. “We thank Katie for her remarkable contributions to LeadingAge and to our field.”
