Enclara Pharmacia Expands in New York Region, Acquires Avanti

Hospice providers in the New York region may see a changing of the guard in their pharmacy benefit management (PBM) and medication delivery services. Enclara Pharmacia a provider of PBM services for hospices and palliative care, will acquire Avanti Health Care Services for an undisclosed sum during the first quarter of 2019.

Enclara provides PBM and medication delivery for more than 500 hospice and palliative care providers caring for nearly 90,000 patients in the United States. Enclara is a privately owned company and does not publicly report earnings.

Avanti began as a retail pharmacy in 1933, and now provides PBM, nursing, and home infusion services to hospices, home health organizations, and nursing homes throughout the state of New York.

“The agreement with Avanti will immediately benefit the hospice community across the five boroughs of New York City, as well as the greater New York region,” said Andy Horowitz, CEO of Enclara says. “The addition of local, same-day direct delivery pharmacy capabilities, through a highly regarded, longstanding provider in the New York market, further bolsters our PBM and national mail order services, allowing for a more seamless experience for our hospice partners’ medication delivery needs”.

PBMs are third parties that administer prescription medication programs for commercial health plans, self-insured employer plans, and government insurance programs such as Medicare Part D.

According to the American Pharmacy Association, these companies develop formularies, contract with pharmacies, negotiate prices with drug manufacturers, and process prescription drug claims.
