New AccentCare-Fairview Venture to Provide Hospice Care in Minnesota

AccentCare Inc. is establishing a new post-acute care organization with Fairview Health Services, which will offer hospice, home health and other care. AccentCare will be majority owner of the company with Fairview maintaining 20% ownership.

The newly formed company, branded as AccentCare® Fairview, will be Fairview’s preferred post-acute provider and will serve patients throughout Minnesota. The companies did not disclose the financial terms of this agreement.

“We are two award-winning health care organizations, rising to the challenge to become even better. Today is the culmination of a journey we have been on to solidify a future of service-minded, quality home health and hospice care for Minnesotans in their most cherished environment — their homes,” said Steve Rodgers, AccentCare’s CEO.

AccentCare is a portfolio company of the private equity firm Advent International, which acquired the organization last year. AccentCare’s patient census across all of its business lines exceeds 145,000 annually.

Fairview Health Services is a nonprofit integrated health system that includes 12 hospitals and medical centers as well as numerous primary care practices and pharmacies. The company merged with St. Paul, Minn.-based HealthEast, another nonprofit health system, in 2017.

AccentCare’s agreement with Fairview mirrors relationships the company has formed with organizations to provide care in the home, such as University of California-Los Angeles Health, Asante, Baylor Scott & White, among other large-scale health care providers.

Hospice utilization among Medicare decedents reached 53.5% during 2018, the 11th-highest in the nation that year, according to the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization. The national average is slightly more than 50%.

“Home health and hospice care are extremely specialized areas, both medically and operationally. We pride ourselves on our commitment to effective and efficient operations across the health care ecosystem, driving a healthier future for all Minnesotans through access to the best care and services available to continuously improve outcomes. This has been the vision of Fairview Health Services for almost 115 years and, with this sale, we have the world-class partners in place to continue to deliver exceptional care to our communities far into the future,” said Jon Lundberg, president of Fairview Senior Services. “Through this sale to AccentCare, our patients will benefit from a partner that shares our dedication to quality care, as they have proven through more than 50 years of recognized post-acute care experience.”
