Sachin Jain, M.D., will be taking the helm of SCAN Health Plan, a nonprofit Medicare Advantage plan, as the company’s president and CEO. Jain in April stepped down as CEO of Aspire Health and CareMore Health, both subsidiaries of Anthem (NYSE: ANTM).
At SCAN, Jain will be leading a $2.4 billion organization that covers more than 215,000 members. The company is a part of the SCAN Group, a nonprofit dedicated to helping senior citizens stay healthy and independent. Jain’s appointment as CEO is effective July 1.
“The [United States] desperately needs solutions for some of its most vexing health care problems and SCAN Health Plan has been a leader in finding these solutions since it was founded in 1977,” said Jain. “As the U.S. population of older adults grows, SCAN will continue to play a leading role in defining the future and pioneering new ways of improving quality and maintaining affordability for older adults.”
In his prior role as CEO of CareMore, the company’s footprint expanded from four states to 32, in large part due to Anthem’s acquisition of palliative care provider Aspire Health in 2018 for an undisclosed sum, ultimately extending its services to as many as 200,000 patients. CareMore focuses on the management and treatment of patients suffering from chronic and serious illness, as well as patients with multiple complex comorbidities. Aspire is a large palliative care provider.
Jain said he intends to keep SCAN Health Plan on a strong growth trajectory under his leadership.
“SCAN will grow to serve more individuals through our many programs and also inspire and partner with others in the industry on new models, paradigms, and services. I am humbled by the opportunity to lead this critical work as SCAN’s next CEO,” he added.
In addition to his work in the private sector and academia, Jain previously led the establishment of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) within the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which eventually developed emerging payment models such as the value-based insurance design model within Medicare Advantage and the Primary Care First initiative.
Jain also currently sits on the Board of Directors for Make-A-Wish America and is an adjunct professor of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
SCAN Health Plan in 2019 became the first health plan in California to receive a 4.5 (out of 5) star rating from CMS for three years straight. U.S. News & World Report ranked the health plan as one of the best Medicare Advantage plans in California for 2019 and 2020.
“Following a national search, the board of directors is confident that Dr. Sachin Jain is the right person to lead SCAN and we are thrilled to welcome him as our next CEO. Sachin has a deep passion for improving the health and wellness of older adults that is truly inspiring,” said Francesca Ruiz de Luzuriaga, chairperson of SCAN’s board of directors. “His vision for health care’s future and his determination to take on the big challenges facing those we serve is a natural fit with SCAN’s mission.”
